The view in practical operation

The ENDOEYE FLEX provides a comfortable field of view for the surgeon, when it is operated with a full understanding of its functions. To begin with, how are the images on the screen perceived, and according to what criteria? Understanding of this mechanism will help secure a comfortable field of view, and furthermore, will provide easier understanding of the stereoscopic positional relation in the abdominal cavity based on the images captured at different observing points.

i Field of view from front side

When the image is captured right in front of the object, that is, when the observing point is set on the horizontal plane passing through the center of the sphere and two pairs of hand instrumentsare inserted from the right and left sides on the same plane, the hand instruments appear to be horizontally inserted from both sides. As to the spatial relation, the near side corresponds to the external sides of the screen, and the far side to the center of the screen. A detailed explanation is given according to the laws of perspective. Here, the depth of the screen is unconsciously visualized as a space with a vanishing point (infinity) at the center of the screen.

ii Field of view from up side

When the observing point is shifted above, a view looking down at the space from above is obtained. The near side of the object corresponds to the bottom of the screen, and the far side to the top of the screen. Therefore, the hand instruments appear to be inserted from the lower right and left on the screen. Here, the depth of the screen is visualized as a space with a vanishing point (infinity) slightly above the center of the screen.

iii Field of view from down side

When the observing point is shifted below, a view looking up at the space from below is obtained. The near side of the object corresponds to the top of the screen, and the far side to the bottom of the screen. Therefore, the hand instruments appear to be inserted from the upper right and left. The vanishing point is placed slightly below the center of the screen.

iv Field of view from right side

When the observing point is shifted to the right, the image is shifted leftward with the vanishing point shifted rightward. The near side of the object corresponds to the left side of the screen, and the hand instruments appear to be inserted from the left.

v Field of view from left side

When the observing point is shifted to the left, the image is shifted rightward with the vanishing point shifted leftward. The near side of the object corresponds to the right side of the screen, and the hand instruments appear to be inserted from the right.
